Why You Should Visit picture-perfect Ramsau in Berchtesgaden

Updated: May 23, 2022

One of the most beautiful and probably also one of the most famous communities in Berchtesgaden is Ramsau. Because you will not only find a magnificent mountain landscape - in Ramsau you will also find the world-famous 500 year old church of St. Sebastian in the middle of the village center.

We have spent 3 days in Ramsau and will present to you our two favorite destinations in this article.

Information for campers: Our camping site in Ramsau was the Simonhof. We have felt very comfortable here. The camping site offers everything you need for a perfect stay: from backery service / breakfast, to clean sanitary facilities and tent sites. The RV sites are not too big, but nicely laid out. In addition, there is a bus stop directly in front of the Simonhof. Here buses go to all the important stations, such as the town center, where the nearest supermarket is located, or the Hintersee at the Zauberwald.

BTW: The bus ride along the alpine road is a highlight in itself!

1. Ramsau: Church St. Sebastian

The church of St. Sebastian in Ramsau was built over 500 years ago and is located very idyllically in the Bavarian mountain landscape, which makes it, then as now, one of the most popular motifs for painters and photographers. If you happen to be in the area, we strongly recommend you to take a stop in the picturesque Ramsau.

In addition to a wonderful view, there are several restaurants in the center of Ramsau where you can stop for a bite to eat. Here you can, with a little luck, experience Bavarian lifestyle live, for example, when the regulars' meet for dinner on Sunday, dressed in their traditional clothing.

In addition, there are some smaller stores for daily needs and a gas station. At the nearby tourist information you can get tips on hiking, excursions and accommodation.

2. Hintersee & Zauberwald: Hotspot for artists and creative people

Not far from Ramsau, you can find Hintersee, a beautiful lake which is surrounded by the magical 'Zauberwald'. You can take the bus directly to the lake comfortably and free of charge with the tourist card. Hintersee can also be reached on foot from Ramsau through the 'Zauberwald' via the 'Malerweg' ('the painter's route').

Information: You get the tourist card directly from your accommodation, if you spend at least one night in Ramsau.

Once you arrive at Hintersee, you can take a walk around the lake - this takes about half an hour for a distance of just under 2.5 km. If you want to take your time to take pictures, you will of course need some more time.

You can expect crystal clear water, in which the surrounding mountain landscape is reflected.

So it's no wonder that Hintersee has been a hotspot for creative people for centuries: during the Romantic period of the 19th century, many landscape painters discovered their artistic ideal right here (hence the name 'Malerweg' which means 'the painter's route'). Today, it is rather the photographers who flock around the lake in search of the perfect motif.

By the way, the hiking trail around the lake is very suitable for families with children.

In addition, Hintersee is also the starting point of many mountain tours and hikes. A relatively well-known hiking trail, for example, is the Prinzregent Luipoldweg.

For nature enthusiasts, there are some display boards that draw attention to the flora and fauna around the lake and forest.

At Hintersee (directly opposite the bus stops) there is also a small kiosk where you can buy coffee and cake, drinks, Wiener sausages, souvenirs and much more.
